The East Fishkill Police Department said it received a report Monday afternoon of the bear sighted on a neighbors's property in the area of Quail Run Road in Wiccopee, a hamlet in East Fishkill.

After a police officer had been sent to patrol the area since it's near a park and playground, it appeared the bear had moved on, police said.

This is the time of year young bears move out of the den and find their own territory, East Fishkill Police are reminding residents.

As a result of this, residents may encounter young bears passing by yards and open spaces looking for food. Therefore, it's important to remember to keep garbage cans in garages or sheds and take down bird feeders, since these may attract bears looking for an easy meal.

Keep pets indoors or supervised while outside. Supervise your smaller children when outside, and tell older ones not to approach bears but come indoors if they see one. Bears will often move along on their own in a short while.
